Seventh and Eighth Grade Information Sheet

Bishop Kearney High School | A Golisano Education Partner is pleased to inform you that the Kearney family will now expand to include students in grades 7 and 8 as of September 2008. Our new 7th and 8th grade students will be able to take advantage of our innovative curriculum and technology initiatives in classrooms newly equipped with the same technology that can be found in our 33 current classrooms.

We are thrilled to have the chance to "empower young men and women to reach their full potential spiritually, academically, and socially-by providing a college preparatory, values based Catholic education in a student centered family atmosphere, in keeping with the tradition of the Christian Brothers and School Sisters of Notre Dame," at a much younger age. Below you will find listed some fast facts that will help you better understand our program.

The Academic Program:

· Seventh and eighth grade students will participate in all New York State-required core curriculum classes: English, Math, Social Studies, Foreign Language, and Science and Religion. They will also participate in art, physical education and music classes. Their program will be enhanced by the opportunity, when appropriate, to take high school level courses at an earlier age and to be exposed to our enhanced high school curriculum with a focus on 21st century skills.

Athletics and Activities:

  • We are looking forward to expanding our sports program to include the modified level for seventh and eighth graders, with the option for students to participate in Junior Varsity sports if they have shown the necessary skills and are developmentally prepared. We will also offer a full spectrum of extracurricular clubs and activities for students, similar to our High School program, but appropriately geared toward the 7th and 8th grade levels.

Uniforms:

  • Our uniforms at the Junior High School will be the same as the High School students, as it is our goal to create continuity and a spirit around the entire Kearney family throughout grades 7-12. Boys will be required to wear suitable khaki trousers, button-down collar shirts with school logo, and ties with optional sweaters or sweater vests. Girls wear button-down collar shirts with school logo, with an optional skirt, Capri or full-length khaki pant and optional sweater or sweater vest. Gym uniforms are also required for physical education. Order information is available by contacting the Director of Student Affairs.

Class Size:

  • We are committed to keep within our current ratio of 20-25 students in a class and feel it is the best size for our learning environment. Appropriate class size adds to the family atmosphere and the ability of students and parents to know each other, their teachers, staff and administrators by name.

Tuition

  • The Bishop Kearney Board of Trustees is in the process of setting tuition for the new Junior High. However; it will be set at a lower level than the high school tuition, and be extremely competitive for the current market.

Admission Process:

  • Prospective seventh and eighth grade students will not be required to take an entrance exam. Administrators will review academic and disciplinary records from current grade schools and, when necessary, will conduct interviews with school personnel and/or the student and parents.

Other questions you may have may be found in our Frequently Asked Questions packet. If there is a specific concern or question not addressed, please feel free to contact our Director of Student Affairs, Anita Nagel, at 342-4000 extension 246. We look forward to welcoming your child as the newest member of our Kearney family.
