Bishop Kearney High School
Philosophy of Music Statement

At Bishop Kearney High School, we believe that participating in the arts is a key to an individual’s personal growth and success. Becoming involved in a music ensemble at Bishop Kearney allows a student to discover things about themselves, helps in personal expression, and teaches one to work in a group. The music staff at Bishop Kearney strives for excellence, not perfection. This means that one should try to do the best they possibly can at all times. Bishop Kearney believes that anyone can come and participate in the arts, be it musical, visual, or dance. Finally, participating in music programs helps one to meet new people, and hopefully, make new friends.

Ensemble Information

Concert Band
The Bishop Kearney Concert Band is open to all instrumentalists, both those that fit into the traditional concert band instrumentation and those who fall into the orchestral instrumentation. Meaning if you are a strings player, don’t worry! We’ll find a place for you in the ensemble. If there are beginners who want to join the band, make arrangements with Mr. Yogis to set up an audition. The staff encourages everyone to get involved.

BK Singers
Choral Singers gives students the opportunity to become more involved in the Liturgy Masses by singing with the choir, as well as performing in the two concerts performance during the year.

Bishop Kearney Guitar Ensemble
At Bishop Kearney, there are many wonderful musicians who play instruments that do not fit into the traditional school band. The BK guitar ensemble was set up to invite the guitar players in the school to get involved and to expand their musicianship.

Bishop Kearney Percussion Ensemble
A new addition to the BK music tradition, the percussion ensemble is open to all students with basic rhythm, reading and musicianship skills.

Bishop Kearney Folk Group
Exploring folk music of different cultures and time periods is an essential part of the New York State standards for music education. This group is set up to invite interested students to take lessons on traditional folk instruments (banjo, mandolin, tin whistle, etc.) and give them an opportunity to play traditional music from all around the world.

Liturgical Band
This ensemble allows students to participate in the school mass by accompanying the BK Singers. Anyone currently enrolled in band may perform with this group.
