BK senior Billy Heyen honored with Wandtke Award

May 22, 2015

Bishop Kearney senior Billy Heyen was named the 2015 recipient of the Steven A. Wandtke Award.  Billy was presented the award on air during the WBKS morning TV news broadcast. The Wandtke award is the highest honor a Bishop Kearney student athlete can receive.

Steven Wandtke (class of 1996) was a well rounded young man who worked hard in the classroom as well as on the basketball court for Bishop Kearney Coach Ed Nietopski. His strong work ethic, humble nature, and his dedication to strive for excellence served Steven well as he went on to college at Niagara University. After graduating from Niagara, Steven was diagnosed with cancer.  Despite a courageous battle and many prayers from the Kearney community, Steven passed away. Steven Wandtke’s memory lives on every year at Bishop Kearney with the presentation of this award. The Wandtke Award plaque is visible to all who enter the Ed Nietopski gymnasium which reads:
He was a selfless team player who strived for
athletic excellence. He was focused on the
task at hand with consistency, reliability, determination
and an innate ability to rise to challenges.
He demonstrated a true respect for the game,
his coach and his teammates.

Congratulations to Billy Heyen for being honored with the Steven A. Wandtke Award. Billy will attend Case Western Reserve University this fall in Cleveland, Ohio.

BK Tradition – Wiffle Ball for AP Chemistry students!

May 7, 2015

Since the late 1990’s a BK tradition has been for AP Chemistry students to play a game of wiffle ball after taking the AP Chem exam in Mr. Burke’s class. This is a wonderful tradition and some well deserved fun after a year of studying and hard work.  Mr. Burke has had dozens of students major in chemistry, physics, or engineering in college…and all cite Mr. Burke as their inspiration for pursuing science as their calling.  Mr. Burke is a dedicated and gifted educator.  He is a member of the Bishop Kearney Hall of Fame.
