BK Middle School students win state Essay Contest 4 years in a row

The Bishop Kearney Middle School has certainly made a name for itself in the annual Monroe County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Fire Prevention Essay Contest. For the past 4 years our students have won multiple awards in the top ten, including 1st place each year. Once the Monroe County winners are chosen, the top essays are forwarded on to the Western NY writing competition for the next level of awards. We recently received wonderful news that two of our middle schoolers placed in the Western NY competition. Taking 2nd place for all 7th graders in Western NY this year is Mary Tran and taking 1st place for all 8th graders in Western NY is Alyssa Schaeffer.

Mary and Alyssa weren’t the only students this week who won writing competitions this week. Bishop Kearney junior Maggie Hurley wrote a short play entitled “Anxiety” which has been chosen for the Young Writer’s Showcase at Geva Theater. This is a huge honor, and a great opportunity for Maggie to work with professional actors and move from page to stage. Her play will be rehearsed and performed during the Fall 2017 Festival of New Theater. Congratulations to these students and kudos to the English department at Bishop Kearney for developing such gifted writers each and every year.

BK pitcher tosses Perfect Game

Perfect game in season opener

Freshman pitcher Emily Phelan made her varsity debut at Bishop Kearney by throwing a perfect game in a 5-0 win in the season opener. No hits..no walks..and not a single base runner reached 1st base on an error. In the world of baseball and softball this is the rarest of all accomplishments. Emily struck out 16 batters and the Kings played flawless defense to prevent any hitters from reaching base.

This was the perfect way to start the softball season for the girls who have trained hard for Coach Herbst to get ready for the season. Bishop Kearney’s school motto is “Do All Things Well”, but at least for this one day the Kings proved that they can “Do All Things Perfect”.

Broadway’s timeless classic musical whisks you away to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up!

Broadway’s timeless classic musical whisks you away to a place where dreams are born and no one ever grows up!

Based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. This high-flying Tony Award-winning musical has been performed around the world and delighted audiences for 60 years.

Peter (Emily Perevich) and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children (Rachel Farrell, Jonathon Dodds, Luke Tytler) late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe led by Tiger Lily (Zoe Ferraro), a band of bungling pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook (Annie Heyen)and sidekick Smee (Emma Mittiga).

Featuring the iconic songs, “I’m Flying,” “I’ve Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up” and “Never Never Land,” and a rousing book full of magic, warmth and adventure, Peter Pan is the perfect show for the child in all of us… who dreamed of soaring high and never growing up. Peter Pan is a dream come true and entertains countless families.
