He was an avid skier and belonged to the Bishop Kearney Ski Club all four years of high school. He loved soccer and played goalie for the travel team in Irondequoit. His greatest passion was hunting and fishing with his friends and most of all, camping with his dad. He always had a smile on his face and a great sense of humor.
When Buddy was 30 years old, he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig Disease. This is a progressive disease that slowly worsens over time. Buddy fought hard for five years, until he passed away with loved ones at his side.
Since then, we have always wanted to do something special to honor the memory of our son.
Something finally struck us in 2013, and we reached out to Bishop Kearney to create a scholarship in Buddy’s name. There are so many deserving students who just need a little extra financial assistance to help them remain at Bishop Kearney. We committed to donating $1,000 per year to help a student who has financial need and enjoys the outdoor activities Buddy so loved.
Recently, we came back to Bishop Kearney to meet the young man who is our current recipient. George is a junior who is recovering from a broken leg he sustained during a BK football game. Despite his situation, George had a big smile and an engaging personality. We talked about activities Buddy liked to do and practical jokes he would play. George declared, “I think if Buddy and I were in school together today, we would be friends.”
More than 70% of Bishop Kearney students receive some level of financial assistance. These students are bright and hard-working, just like Buddy and his classmates like you. They just need a little extra help. Some students have parents who have lost a job or suffered a sudden illness. We want to help them have the same opportunity you did to succeed.
We are asking you as a member of The Class of 1984 to help us grow this scholarship by coming together to match the $1,000 gift we are committed to each year. With more than 300 graduates, it should be easy to accomplish. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kind consideration. A gift of any size would be greatly appreciated.
May God Bless you and your family,
Joseph and Carmella DiMaria
