Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority Awarded $15,000 Grant

Irondequoit, N.Y. – May 30, 2018 – Today, Bishop Kearney High School (BKHS) broke ground on its Vegetable Garden Greenhouse. The 10’ by 20’ structure is expected to be finished by August 13th and ready to be used when school begins in September. The $15,000 grant to fund the project was awarded from The Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority. Members of Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Town of Irondequoit, school officials and students took shovels to the ground and announced the new project.

“We’re always seeking opportunities that will provide students with unique experiences that enhance their education here at Bishop Kearney,” said Steve Salluzzo, Bishop Kearney President. “Programs like the greenhouse give our students hands-on learning about sustainable agriculture that can translate into a variety of topics like business, self-sufficiency, and responsibility. This greenhouse will provide our students with unique, hands-on experience with sustainable agriculture. It will teach students in and outside of the classroom about the food they consume.”

The food produced will eventually be available to students in the cafeteria during lunch and eventually to local food pantries and farm markets.  The science curriculum will be updated to involve the Greenhouse.
