Bishop Kearney High School Completes Purchase of its Irondequoit Campus
IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y., MAY 6, 2014 — The Board of Trustees at Bishop Kearney High School has announced that the school formally purchased the property at 125 Kings Highway in Irondequoit, which has served as the school’s home for more than a half century. The announcement came during a news conference held on campus today.
Bishop Kearney acquired the school building and 42 acres of surrounding land from The Christian Brothers Institute and the Christian Brothers of Ireland for a price of $3.4 million.
Financing for the purchase has been provided by Main Street Fishers LLC. The entire transaction was facilitated by B. Thomas Golisano, founder and chairman of Paychex Corp. and a longtime Bishop Kearney benefactor. The purchase by Bishop Kearney is a critical step toward ensuring the school’s long-term stability.
“For 52 years, Bishop Kearney High School has been preparing students for success in college and beyond, and we are now in much better position to secure our destiny,” said Tom O’Neil, Bishop Kearney president. “This purchase will allow us to serve many more generations to come, and we can’t say enough to express our gratitude to Mr. Golisano for his unwavering support.”
Golisano first partnered with Bishop Kearney in 2007 to establish the College Prep Plus curriculum and provide each incoming student with a free laptop computer. The program has helped Kearney achieve a 100 percent graduation rate over the past five years, and each of those students earned college acceptance. And last year through Golisano’s support, the school established the Golisano Scholar Fund, which ensures scholarship assistance for every newly enrolled student from the Rochester region.
“What is extraordinary about Bishop Kearney is its ability to achieve significant levels of success at a cost that is one-half to one-third of public education,” Golisano stated. “Some of the school’s students come from a challenging environment, so I am overwhelmingly proud of the opportunity to renew my investment in Bishop Kearney’s future. It is the unsung hero of Rochester education.”
As a result of the purchase, school officials are now in the process of forming committees to investigate potential improvements to the property including a variety of ‘green initiatives’ and upgrades to the athletic facilities.
