To be clear, we’re not talking about just any big game. We’re talking about a literal ‘must-win.’ As in: win, or the season is over.
While there’s no guarantee of a positive result, if a team has put in the work over the previous months to build the proper habits, it gives itself the best opportunity to execute in those biggest of games.
For the BK Selects boys 16U team, that season-defining moment arrived on March 16, in the New York state championship game against the Buffalo Jr. Sabres.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The art and/or science of peaking for the playoffs is inexact.
That doesn’t mean it should be disregarded, either.
At the end of a competitive season lengthy enough to rival anything they’ll see in college or the pros, the BK Selects girls are back at work, preparing for what they hope is another two-team trip to USA Hockey Nationals in early April.
“Our girls do a great job throughout the year, learning to have a routine and a process, and through the year they grow that process,” said BK Director of Girls Hockey Cari Coen.
“It’s a really big piece to (have) individual and team success,” she continued. “We talk about being a pro, right? That means taking care of everything you do, if it’s academically, socially or athletically.”
With the arrival of March comes the New York state tournament, with the 19Us set to face Buffalo’s Nichols School in a two-game series this weekend, while the 16Us will line up against the Rochester Jr. Americans, Syracuse Valley Eagles and Team Long Island.
After wrapping up the regular season last weekend, it’s down to this to see if the BK Selects girls play on.
UTICA, N.Y. — With all that the BK Selects boys have accomplished in just a few seasons of existence, it’s difficult to believe they’re still achieving some notable firsts.
But that’s exactly what the 18U and 14U teams pulled off Feb. 9 in the Mohawk Valley, as they each won the first NE Pack league championships in those age groups for the BK Selects program.
Over the span of four hours at the Utica University Nexus Center, the BK Selects 14Us defeated Mount St. Charles, 6-4, in their league final and the 18Us took down Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, 4-1, in their title game.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Not like there was a ton to complain about on the surface for the BK Selects 18U boys team, but some fine-tuning was still in order.
Despite the team ranking in and around the national top 10 throughout this season, head coach David Arduin and his staff felt they could do better.
Namely, they could do better when it comes to putting the puck in the net.
“Coming out of break, we’ve used a lot of our practice time and getting our guys’ brains wrapped around how to score goals and where to score goals,” Arduin said in a recent conversation.
“It’s just about getting them excited to be in these key (scoring) situations and be ready.”
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With three months of the hockey season in the books and the calendar page having turned over to 2025, the BK Selects girls have plenty to show for their efforts.
As of the second week of January, the 19U team sits at 37-3-0 and is ranked second in the nation, while the 16Us are 28-8-4 and ninth. That’s a lot of tangible results, and great ones at that.
But as events over the past couple of months have reminded, the BK Selects experience is about much more than wins and losses, goals and assists, blocks and saves.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Home games are especially valuable in elite youth hockey, since life on the road is the default mode.
So all the better to put together a fantastic performance on a blessedly suitcase-free weekend, like the BK Selects 14U boys did Dec. 6-8 in greater Rochester, winning the annual USHL American Cup powered by Wegmans.
In going 4-0 over the weekend, Head Coach Greg Collins’ team not only grabbed a banner in its first true tournament of the season, it also extended an impressive streak: Since Nov. 1, the 14Us have gone 12-2, with their only two losses occurring in overtime.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Straight up, the first month of the 2024-25 season didn’t go the way the BK Selects 15O boys would’ve preferred.
After winning their first four games here in Rochester on opening weekend, the 15Os lost their next eight in a row — with the final six games of that slump coming against NE Pack league competition.
But starting with a 7-1 win over Buffalo Regals on Oct. 8, head coach Ben McManama’s team reeled off 12 wins in a 14-game stretch, with one of the two losses coming in overtime.
Quite the rebound, and all before the holiday season, even.
This season, the 19U girls have taken that long-term performance trend to a new level.
With two months of the schedule in the history books, they have literally not lost a single game — their record is a stunning 30-0-0 after posting six more wins at the Premier Ice Prospects’ Roc City Girls Fest from Nov. 1-3.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As much as it may seem natural to separate team play in hockey from goaltending, the reality is that each aspect often feeds off the other.
That feedback loop can be positive or negative — either a virtuous cycle, or a vicious one.
For the BK Selects 18U boys, they’ve seen the bright side of that phenomenon, as the studly play of goalies Sammy Doyon-Cataquiz (Falls Church, Va.) and Ethan Phillips (Rochester, N.Y.) has bolstered the team's level through the opening weeks of 2024-25.
“The key to our team's success is how we were able to build strong and positive connections with each other. This group that started as individuals, with various backgrounds and athletic experiences, transformed into a team, then grew into a family.”
