ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Home games are especially valuable in elite youth hockey, since life on the road is the default mode.
So all the better to put together a fantastic performance on a blessedly suitcase-free weekend, like the BK Selects 14U boys did Dec. 6-8 in greater Rochester, winning the annual USHL American Cup powered by Wegmans.
In going 4-0 over the weekend, Head Coach Greg Collins’ team not only grabbed a banner in its first true tournament of the season, it also extended an impressive streak: Since Nov. 1, the 14Us have gone 12-2, with their only two losses occurring in overtime.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Straight up, the first month of the 2024-25 season didn’t go the way the BK Selects 15O boys would’ve preferred.
After winning their first four games here in Rochester on opening weekend, the 15Os lost their next eight in a row — with the final six games of that slump coming against NE Pack league competition.
But starting with a 7-1 win over Buffalo Regals on Oct. 8, head coach Ben McManama’s team reeled off 12 wins in a 14-game stretch, with one of the two losses coming in overtime.
Quite the rebound, and all before the holiday season, even.
This season, the 19U girls have taken that long-term performance trend to a new level.
With two months of the schedule in the history books, they have literally not lost a single game — their record is a stunning 30-0-0 after posting six more wins at the Premier Ice Prospects’ Roc City Girls Fest from Nov. 1-3.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As much as it may seem natural to separate team play in hockey from goaltending, the reality is that each aspect often feeds off the other.
That feedback loop can be positive or negative — either a virtuous cycle, or a vicious one.
For the BK Selects 18U boys, they’ve seen the bright side of that phenomenon, as the studly play of goalies Sammy Doyon-Cataquiz (Falls Church, Va.) and Ethan Phillips (Rochester, N.Y.) has bolstered the team's level through the opening weeks of 2024-25.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — One thing’s for sure: No one can accuse the BK Selects boys of easing their way into the 2024-25 competitive season.
Take the 16U team, for example.
After just a handful of preseason practices, head coach Dan Collins’ crew started September with a trip to Mount St. Charles in Rhode Island for the first NE Pack conference event of the year, where they one once and lost twice.
From there, they hosted the JGG (Just Get Good) Kickoff Classic in Rochester, playing four games in three days and taking home the champions’ banner there, along with the 15O team.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — While every hockey fan loves to see a eye-catching goal or a show-stopping assist, the mathematical fact remains that a goal prevented is always going to be a little more valuable than a goal created.
Why? Because while a team could theoretically suffer a defeat no matter how many times it lights the lamp, it literally cannot lose if it doesn’t allow any goals.
The BK Selects 16U girls team is operating like they took that bit of knowledge to heart, as they’ve hardly conceded during an 11-3-1 start to the season.
